President’s Letter January 2024

Dear MRC Members,

Happy New Year! I hope that 2024 has started well for you.

MRC: Meet the Author, Diane Hessan

The MRC got off to a flying start on January 5th with MRC: Meet the Author, this time with Diane Hessan. Diane took us through the inside story on Our Common Ground, her book published from a wealth of articles written for The Boston Globe, based on feedback from 500 participants over 4 years representing views from across the political divide. Whilst politics created division, the majority of people in the US had similar and more moderate views when it came to policy.

Diane also had some fascinating new data to share with us that she had recently collected. Most people are not happy with either Joe Biden or Donald Trump as potential Presidential candidates but their fear of their least favorite candidate will ensure high turnout. When Diane asked who people would vote for if their favorite candidate was not available, Nikki Haley was the overwhelming second choice.

Next up in this series is Mark Earls! Put April 5th into your calendars now. Mark has written many books and this session will focus on his last two Creative Superpowers: Equip Yourself for the Age of Creativity (2021) and Copy, Copy, Copy: How to Do Smarter Marketing by Using Other People’s Ideas (2015).

Understanding the 2024 Regulatory Landscape in Market Research

Next up was a highly practical and sometimes controversial look at the regulatory landscape in market research. Howard Fienberg, Insights Association lobbyist, was our esteemed guest at our webinar on January 18th, talking through upcoming legislation and how to navigate it. In particular, Howard spoke about the patchwork legislation coming through state by state and the likely federal legislation in the future. He spoke about this in relation to European laws, such as GDPR, and the impact on market research professionals. With members from both sides of the Atlantic, this was a very animated and well-informed discussion.
