In Memoriam – Bill Harvey

The Market Research Council mourns the loss of Bill Harvey, a longtime member, 2018 MRC Hall of Fame inductee, and influential innovator in advertising and media research. Bill passed away on September 18, 2026, at the age of 84. His contributions helped shape modern media measurement, while his curiosity, optimism, and warmth left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Bill continually pushed advertising and media research into new territory. From audience measurement and media optimization to addressable television, attribution, privacy standards, and artificial intelligence, he spent his career exploring how new technologies and approaches could help the industry better understand audiences and advertising effectiveness.

Early in his career, Bill developed the Area of Dominant Influence (ADI) while at the American Research Bureau, later Arbitron. The framework helped define television markets and became a precursor to Nielsen’s Designated Market Area (DMA) structure. He later worked at Grey Advertising, Kenyon & Eckhardt, and Interpublic, where he pioneered the development and use of media optimizers.

His entrepreneurial work began with New Electronic Media Science (NEMS), which he founded in the 1970s. He later co-founded Next Century Media (NCM), where his work helped advance addressable television, interactive media measurement, and industry privacy standards.

That drive to explore new approaches continued throughout his career. Bill founded TRA, which helped demonstrate how television and digital exposure data could be connected with household purchase data to better understand advertising effectiveness and business results. TiVo acquired TRA in 2012. In his later years, he co-founded RMTLabs, a neuro-motivational intelligence company focused on understanding the motivations behind consumer behavior and advertising effectiveness.

His contributions earned many honors, including the ARF Great Mind Award in 2008 and the inaugural Erwin Ephron Demystification Award in 2014. Bill was inducted into the Market Research Council Hall of Fame in 2018 and received a Science and Technology Emmy in 2022 for his work advancing television viewing measurement.

Beyond his work as a researcher and entrepreneur, Bill was an author, thinker, and mentor. His writing explored consciousness, intuition, human potential, and the connection between science and spirituality. His 1976 book Mind Magic, now in its sixth edition, reflected a lifelong interest in understanding the mind and helping people better understand themselves and one another.

Within the Market Research Council, Bill was a valued member and an active part of the community, sharing his ideas, experience, and perspective with fellow members. During the pandemic, he was a familiar presence at MRC virtual gatherings, often joining in a Hawaiian shirt, a glass of red wine, and a smile.

His legacy lives on in the research, advertising, and media industries and in the many people he influenced along the way. The Market Research Council extends its condolences to Bill’s family, friends, colleagues, and the broader research community. He will be deeply missed.
